Traveling with your dog tidbits

Here are some handy tips to know when you are planning a trip with your dog. There are many ways you may choose to get to your vacation destination, and thorough planning ahead will help ensure that every goes pawsitively perfect.

Road Trip with your Dog

If you have a long drive ahead make sure to bring lots of water (there are many handy water container/dish bowl combinations) along for the ride.

Snacks tend to work better than food during the car ride as many dogs tend not to be very interested in eating a meal while on the road.

Try stopping every two -three hours to let your dog stretch their paws and wag their tails for a few minutes - and a pee break.

Bringing your dog into Canada - Canadian Border Requirements

If you plan to drive with your dog into Canada here are the border requirements.
Pet dogs eight (8) months of age or over from a Rabies-Free Country (officially recognized as such by Canada) Dogs may enter Canada if accompanied by a certificate, in either English or French, of an official government veterinarian. The certificate must clearly identify the animals and show that:

  • Rabies has not existed in that country for the six (6) month period immediately preceding the shipment of the animals; and,
  • The animals have been in that country for the six (6) month period referred or since birth.

Flying With your Dog

Taking your pup on an airplane can be a scary and sometimes even dangerous situation for them. You must take all possible steps to insure their safety. You cannot trust the airline to do it. Try to avoid connecting flights wherever possible.
Tape the flight information securely to the outside of the kennel. Write it on colorful paper; include the dog's name, your name and phone number, the name and phone number of the person picking him up and the flight number and destinations.
Tape a bag of food and cookies to the outside of the kennel.
Freeze a small amount of water in the bottom of the water bowl and attach it right before the flight.
Wait until the flight take off before leaving. Watch your dog being loaded onto the plane. If you are flying on the same flight, watch until your dog is loaded onto the plane before you get on the flight.
If it's hot weather, choose a flight very early in the morning or very late at night. Never let a dog fly when the temperature is over 85 degrees. If the plane is delayed at the gate or on the runway, insist that they take your dog off.
Your dog's life is precious to you. If something does not seem right to you, ask to talk to a supervisor. Do not give up until you are certain that your dog is going to be safe.
